My Fathers Eulogy

Preparing this Eulogy might have been the hardest piece of writing that I have completed. Although I never thought this day would come, I also never thought I would have the strength to find the words to speak about it. These past 2 weeks have been the hardest of my life but my father has given me an indescribable amount of strength to honour him the way I should.

Below is the Eulogy that I wrote for my beloved father, although I did not have the courage to read it in church one of my dearest cousins did an excellent job for me.

We gather here today to send our final goodbyes to Rob Scarlato. Many of us have lost a very important person in our lives but although he is no longer with us physically he will be in our hearts forever.

Unfortunately this terrible day has come and it saddens everyone in this room to see you go, but we all know that you are at peace. There is no more suffering, pain or sadness. You are finally free and for that I am forever grateful because seeing you suffer hurt more and more each day. Today you are surrounded by so many people who love you and will cherish the memories you’ve made. You are truly an inspiration to many and we are so grateful to have had you in our lives.

You were a man who appreciated and understood the meaning of family, one who loved unconditionally and had a smile so bright it could light up a room. You were the life of the party and the guy everyone wanted to hang around with. You had the hair, the clothes, the looks, and the heart that everyone wanted. Too bad you couldn’t keep the hair and ditch the clothes from the 80’s.

Always known as the star athlete, you showed everyone what it meant to be passionate about something you loved. Talented and strong, you would take any challenge that was thrown your way and rise to the occasion. You were a star on and off the ice, the real MVP.

You made sure to leave an everlasting memory with everyone you met. Whether it was because you were gentile and so sincere, because you were brave and full of positivity or because you were funny and at times a little ridiculous and hot-headed, you were someone who could never be forgotten.

Simple gestures was also something that you were so good with. You knew exactly how to make someone feel special and remind them how much they are loved. You were the one who never missed a birthday, called on every holiday and was the one to count on for the latest sports updates. People turned to you because you were trustworthy and honest, you were helpful and kind and you were sincere and generous.

Even in the darkest of times you were always lending a helping hand. It didn’t matter if you were in pain, you were always putting your family first which shows how genuine and caring you were. Seeing those around you happy was all you ever wanted and you would go through great lengths to see your loved ones smile.

Your smile was beautiful and full of life, one that can never be forgotten. Your sense of humour and spark of energy brought so much colour to our lives as the laughter you created was powerful and up lifting. There was never a dull moment when you were around.

Sometimes I felt like I should grab a bowl of popcorn and sit back to watch the movie that was taking place inside the Scarlato house. When you had an opinion you were sure to vocalize it and your facial expressions were nothing short of entertaining. Your sense of sarcasm wasn’t bad either and you had such an extensive vocabulary. Needless to say, things may not be as loud or crazy with you not around but I’m sure you will send us signs from above.

Full of emotion was something everyone knew about you. Whether they were tears of happiness or sadness there were always tears. You never were able to hide your emotions that well but I never saw this as a bad thing, instead such a beautiful thing because a man who can truly show how he feels and feel comfortable doing so is a true man.

As I sit here and write this for you, I am constantly finding myself at a loss for words. No words can ever justify how incredible you were and amount to the love you have given to everyone in this room or the memories of you that will be in our hearts for ever.

Our memories of you are so special, not only because you helped to create them but because you are the reason they exist. You may not have realized this but you touched so many people and inspired everyone with your charisma and sweet ways.

You may have been the most stubborn man who just couldn’t stay quiet, definitely a force to be reckoned with but you will always be remembered for your beautiful soul and kind eyes.

Now it’s time to relax, smoke as you please, have a few drinks and watch the Leafs lose. I’m sure Nonno has a few words for you first but as soon as he’s done giving you a piece of his mind, you both can sit back and enjoy each others company.

Although I can’t imagine what my life will be like without you here, I know that you will be with me every step of the way and will guide me in the best direction. I am so lucky to have such a beautiful Guardian Angel and I promise to make you proud.

Over the past few days you have given me so much strength to carry on and I will continue to do so not only for our family but for you because that is exactly what you would have wanted. You would have wanted us all to be strong through this tough time and stick together. So we will do just that and everything we do will be for you.

I love you daddy!

  1. This is a beautiful tribute and you are a beautiful girl. Another testament to your father’s brilliance – having raised you. You are the special one. He will always be in your heart and he will guide you. In that you must believe.

I’m sorry you lost your father so young, but your maturity is demonstrated in your words and actions. I wish you much love and happiness in your life.
